What? This one wasn't really good???? ;-) Geez, way to put the pressure on DC! Looking forward to bringing it! :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Live! It was fun to do, as always. :)
Hi Lily, Pain can cause all kinds of behavior issues on the ground and under saddle. If you haven't ridden him in 10 months, I'm sure it isn't riding related...although it could be a memory issue. That doesn't mean that you caused it, but it coul...
We have talked about some kind of a sliding boot and we are working on it. It's new territory for everyone it seems, but it's got to be doable. I ride a barefoot reiner at Maverick that consistently gives me 3 foot slides from little more than an...
Good for you Isabelle. So much that is considered the "norm" in regard to horse training is simply habit. Someone does something that worked for them, and everyone else jumps on the bandwagon. Rarely does someone stop to think, "what am I doing to...
Like 'Live' I used my tie-down when I first started doing barrel runs, mostly cause my trainer told me to, according to him Melody would toss her head up and could hit me on the head ( I think i mentioned here he used to own her before me). Then w...
I'm not a barrel racer, but I wanted to chime in. I will admit that I've used tie downs on my horse. Why? honestly because I didnt know better and that was something that I've been recommended that I try. Did it work? it did as long as I used it.....

I am usually appalled when I see the way barrel racers ride their horses. The horse's are jumping out of their skin, their heads are tied down (which I do understand may help with balance, but why is the horse unbalanced in the first place?), and ...

Profile Information

Proud owner of how many horses or other pets?
I am the proud owner of a 2 year old palomino QH filly. She was rescued by her sire's owners. She was still pretty skinny when I bought her and woefully unhandled, but she's putting on weight and coming around really well. I will be blogging about her progress and sharing updates about her on my website.
Something About Me:
I was born in California where I grew up riding and showing horses, mostly Western. I retrained my own show horse after wanting to see if I could get better results if I developed his athletic ability and willingness instead of using my trainers' methods of intimidating him into submission.
After a visit to the Southeast in '06 and seeing the open space and horse-friendly environment, I decided to relocate to Tennessee.
What do you want to bring to this community?
I want to share my love of horses and the level of understanding, partnership, and connection that I have been lucky enough to achieve and that I believe is possible for everyone to experience.
Farah DeJohnette was kind enough to introduce me to the world of blogging. So, I'm posting information related to the Natural Horse Network here and general training and behavior topics on blogspot: Dale's Blog

If you have any comments or questions, I'd love to hear them!

Here I go again!!

I'm two for two as far as missing my own radio show. A week ago last Friday I was scheduled to do my monthly radio program on the Network. Well, on that same afternoon we went out to pick up our new 9 mo. old stud colt. He did not want to get caught! It all took a lot longer than expected. Who said that when we need to be somewhere at a specific time don't rely on horses to follow our schedule?? Hmm...

Anyway, I didn't have the number to the program with me and when I got back to the ranch, wit… Continue

My Apologies

Dear Community,

I am writing to share my sincere apologies about last Friday's radio program...the one which I failed to attend.

Life has been pretty crazy lately. Apparently my brain was overloaded.
Despite confirming with DC the night before, I simply forgot all about the show the next day.
I am so sorry and feel terrible about doing that.

DC was kind enough to reschedule the show October 17th at 6:00 pm MT. I hope you'll tune in then.
I will be there, I promise!!

Sincerely,
Dale

Tolerance vs. Acceptance

As you know, there are a million different ways to get a horse to do something that you want him to do. Given enough time and repetition, they all work. I can teach a horse to lead like a perfect angel if I yank a chain across his nose every time he steps ahead of me, or smack him with a whip when he lags behind. Want your horse to carry his head in a certain position? Punishment will work. Yank and jerk on the reins to intimidate your horse into the perfect headset. He'll probably keep it there… Continue

Recent Clinic

I had my first clinic at the Free Spirit Farm, to which I recently relocated. It was awesome! I don't say that to brag. I say that because I am just as amazed to see these horses transform before my eyes as their owners are.

I have to share a story about one of the participants. I use a wading pool as the final challenge of the day. On day one, the horses are worked on the ground through various obstacles that are gradually more difficult and on day two we work the obstacles under saddle.

When… Continue

Radio Show

Hi Everyone!

I want to share how much I enjoyed yesterday's radio program. I hope it was as enjoyable to those who listened or who will be listening to the archived version.
If you have any comments or feedback, I would love to hear from you.

I'm looking forward to the next broadcast when the topic is trailer loading.

Thanks!
Dale

Your Palomino is gorgeous she in good hands now. Good for you taking a rescue horse. I have taken in a warmblood before even though he had a lot of issues. But he was my best friend. He really looked out for me. He knew so much and he taught me a lot . Good luck will look forward to the up coming new pictures of her.

I have a friend that is starting a horse rescue and she is currently building an indoor.... I'm thinking that we may need to talk in the next 6 months or so...

I would love to participate... me and my mare really need some leadership, lol.... although I dont know if you would classify it as leadership. our problems come from lack of finishing.... and not having an arena to work in, we have alot of issues with things that require control, as in disengagement. being a complete trail rider, I usually have no need of that type of control, but the more I do with her, the more I'm realizing that its very important.

I'm looking forward to talking with you when you are on live with the radio show, I cant wait to hear what you have to say.

If I had a place, I would have you out in a heartbeat. That would be most excellent. I agree with you on California. I was born and raised in Northern California, before moving here to Idaho.... I like Idaho, its a good place to be.

You know, I was just reading your comment about Chicago screws, and I must say how right you are, lol....

I've had this happen to me at a jackpot roping... luckily I found the rein hanging after I came back to my horse from where she was tied, so no harm, no foul, but still - it certainly drilled that lesson into my head. Great idea about the nail polish.

It`s so nice to see that you joined the trick training group. I was somewhat surprized but then it is a great way to bond with your horse. It also helps keeps them flexable and their mind fresh and always thinking. Of course mine see it as a great way to get carrots too.
